Meet Billy from Virginia Beach, Virginia

Billy Phillips is a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy and has been in the Navy for almost 20 years. They are planning for a deployment in the next year but when on land, Billy coaches the Lynnhaven Boys Baseball Team in Virginia Beach. His request of $5,000 will be used to purchase new uniforms, helmets, baseballs, bats, and gloves. Lynnhaven Baseball has been in the community for over 50 years and involves hundreds of boys and girls. Billy says the new equipment will be used for years to come, by at least 1,000 kids.

We have an update from Billy, who's been a busy man. He's been in and out to sea as well as playing baseball. His team just finished their season a week ago......winning a tournament in Bowie, MD (after playing 6 games in 3 days!) and advanced to the World Series in Jackson, Mississippi. Our congratulations to everyone involved!

I received a really nice email this week and hope the sender doesn't mind my sharing it here...

Hi, I’m one of Billy Phillips’ 11-12 year olds from Lynnhaven Pony Baseball Tournament team and my father runs the equipment room and I just wanted to say Thank You So Much for giving us 5,000 dollars for new equipment. :-)
Sincerely,
Meagan Barfield

Meagan, thanks for taking time to write and you are very welcome! And by the way, I really admire you for playing sports. Keep it up!

When I called Billy to congratulate him on receiving his grant, we was on a baseball field with his team of 11 and 12 year olds who were about to play a game (they almost got rained out). The whole team gave me a loud "Thank you!" cheer for all the new equipment they'll be getting. In speaking to Billy, I found out that he is married with 2 children, a 17-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter. Billy has already been deployed to the Persian Gulf and may go there again.
